cut off a text string

Say I had a paragraph of text, but I only wanted to print the first 30 charecters of that paragraph, how would I do that?

where $full is the full paragraph, and $partial is the first 30 characters:

$partial = substr($full, 0, 30);

hope thats what you were looking for.

That was it, thanks.... I knew it was in that family of functions, but couldn't quite find it!

What about if I wanted to cut the paragraph off at after 2 sentences? What would I do?

Say your sentence was:

"My dogs name is Scruffy. He has a loud bark. He needs a bath."

To only print the first two sentences you would do the following:

$sentence = "My dogs name is Scruffy. He has a loud bark. He needs a bath.";
$sentence = explode(".", $sentence);

This stores each sentence in an array minus the full stop.

Therefore,

$sentence[0] = "My dogs name is Scruffy"
$sentence[1] = "He has a loud bark";
$sentence[2] = "He needs a bath"

To print only the first two sentences out:

$content = $sentence[0].". ".$sentence[1].". ";
echo $content;

Ive tested this and it works.
