need help displaying certain text if no result from mySQL query

This is probably really simple but I cant seem to get it to work.
I have a page that queries a DB. I want certain text to appear if the mysql query returns no results. i.e "Sorry, there are no entries for this category"

Easy answer:

if (!mysql_num_rows($result))
{
//error message here
exit;
}
//else other stuff goes here
