select all between two spots in a variable

I am trying to figure out a way to take this:

$article = "random text here [start]<img src='graphic.gif'>[/end] more random text";

seach $article for [start] store everything until it hits [/end] into a new variable.

I can't figure this one out. Any help anyone?

ereg('\[start\](.*)\[/end\]',$article,$match);
echo $match[1];
