get the last record

Does anyone know how I can find the last record inserted into a particular table. I've looked at the mysql_insert_id function, but there seems to be too much risk of the last record being something in a totally unrelated table.

Basically, I am building a record number, other than it's id, which will go chassis-prob-#####. I want to get the last record out of the table, increment the number, and insert a new record.

i also wanted to retrieve the last record inserted.

so heres what i did, i knew that each time a record was inserted the id number incremented by 1. so i had a sql statement that asked for the max(id) and then using that result put it into another sql statement.

Use mysql_insert_id();
