dynamic pull down menu

Hello,

does anyone know a good site that has a tutorial on dynamic pulldown menu? preferably in php not javascript. but javascript is okay too.

for example, I have 4 fields: division, department, sub-dept, and section.
each field has a pulldown menu. so if I click on one of items on the division pulldown menu...the department pulldown menu will change according to the item...and after that the sub-dept pulldown menu will change according to the item chosen on the department...finally the section changed.

not sure if I make myself clear but anyway..
can someone help me with this?

PHP IS A SERVER-PARSED LANGUAGE, MEANING THAT ALL PHP CODE IS "COMPILED" BY THE SERVER, WHICH IN TURN ONLY RETURNS HTML TO THE CLIENT.

JAVASCRIPT IS A CLIENT-SIDE LANGUAGE, MEANING THAT IT IS PROCESSED BY THE CLIENT BROWSER.

you must use javascript (or vbscript/etc) for this sort of thing.

I am looking for the same code ./ I have searched the net but did not find anthing.

THere is one exmple in this forum about dynamic drop downlist but it is a example of using array and javascript. If i have undred items..I will have to declare in arrya hundred items !

Hopefully..some xpert will answer 🙁

i guess we can't escape from declaring those arrays.

i know if i do it in php there has to be a page refresh for every pull down. my friend did it in cold fusion and the page has to reload several times because he has several pulldown menus.

i guess in javascript then.

You will read otherwise BUT there is nothing wrong with carefully written javascript. Check out devguru for my alltime favourite javascript site.

Used properly, javascript can enhance a site and reduce server load. However, depending on javascript for site funcionality decreases reliablility and is often a mistake. Doing it with multiple pages on the server side is not as slick, but it does insure your visitors will get the information they need.

The ONLY way to make dynamic menus in javascript is to pass ALL the database information that might be displayed to the client then let javascript determine what to display. One method that works with javascript is to find a site that does what you want and see how they did it, such as this site:

There are probably easier examples around, though.
