Is there a way to dynamically create a thumbnail from an image stored in the database? Let say I have an image of size 50k stored in the db, but when a user views the page dynamically change the size to lets say 5k without having two separate images in the db. Keeping in mind I don’t want to shrink the image, but change the size. Thanks for any help.

Are you trying to change the size it is shown at or the actual file size itself?

I'm not sure it's even possible to change the file size without changing the dimensions of the file itself...unless you compress it.

This question was proposed to me by the web master and I wasn't entirely sure if it is possibly. Her idea is to have one normal size file for download if the user choices to save the img, but only show thumbnails if they are viewing it through a browser. So that way page is not loaded down because of images, but they only want one file to be stored in the database. The only thing I can think of is to have two tables, but they only want one. If you or anyone have ideas, I would greatly thankful.

You could create a thumbnail of the image on the fly to show to the viewer...would that help you out?

Check out the ImageCreateFromJPEG and related functions.

I have found that that way (creating thumbnails) works well with these functions, however, if you would like better quality in the image (that you have created on the fly) check on ImageMagick, it is better for actually re-sizing images and such.
