how to validate date range...

I am currently working on a tour site (bus tour) and on the order page the customer can select for what date he wants the tour.
But I have to validate that the tour is available on that date, and I am stuck on that... Can anyone help?
Example:
Tour A is available form 3 March 2002 - 24 October 2002, so if someone enters 30 October 2002, it should say "Tour not available on this date".

May be something like this:

$tour_wanted_time = strtotime($tour_wanted);
$tour_start_time = strtotime($tour_start);
$tour_end_time =  strtotime($tour_end);
