Using C programs with PHP

I was reading an article i think on this site and they were talking about using compliled c programs with php to increase speed and efficency. Since php is a layer on top of c, i could see how this is possible. Have any of you tried it. Do you know of any tutorials that could get me started. Im an expert in c and c++, but i have never used it in conjuction with php.

After your c program is complied, how do you run this executable? Hows does it interact with your php code? To clarify, how is data shared between your php code and C.

Any help our direction to some type of documenatation on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

There are a few chapters in the manual covering extensions to PHP. While Zend offers its own description of the API.

A less interesting possibility is to just use system calls and communicate with the external program through its command line.
