i need help for a script that prints to a text file like this:

1:Joe|23|www.joe.com
2:Matt|16|www.matt.com
3:George|45|www.george.com

and script that can remove/read the entries

i'm not 100% sure because i'm still fairly new to PHP, but i don't think it's possible to remove the entries. i know it's possible to do everything you want done except that. you probably have to use MySql for this if you want to remove a specific entry.

Ok - to go over this for the 100th time (and I havent been posting to this board very long)....

We are not here to write all your damn code for you!!!!!!!!! Please don't come along and ask people here to produce code for you - this is a HELP forum - not a "damn - help me, I really need a program that will go off and make the tea, and let me know when I have mail, and do my shopping".

To help you get started on your great trip of finding out how to do stuff for yourself, let me guide you to some ways to do it.

1, Goto php.net. This is THE resource for PHP on the net. As they say again and again RTFM. This has the added bonus of comments attached to function pages.

2, In particular look for File functions. You can open, read, write to files as required.

3, In particular look at "file" function. This lets you read file contents into an array.

4, The next step after readin in would be to split up the line. Try some regular expressions if you are really brave (I wouldn't recommend this for a newbie though), or try a function like "explode" which will split a string (such as fred:bob:steve) on a set delimiter (i.e. ":") and return these elements in an array.

5, Think about how you would do this in reverse to save them back out.

i havent asked anyone to do that, i just want to know the process for small parts of my code, and this is just entries for optional upload logging, not for like just logging visitors or something, theres much more to my code than just this:mad:

If you were looking for some help, it is easier to see where your at with some code, but it doesn't look like you've started this bit yet. Still - take a look at the method I suggested. It should work well, just requires a bit of research. Good luck!

P.S. This works well as a class - I developed one for a permissions based system on a physical file structure (kinda like a .htaccess implementation for a more specific purpose)

This isn't just a 3 line piece of code.

You want functions to read the file into an array... a function to write that array back out. Maybe some anciallary functions to add a user, delete a user, update a user.

As I say, not just a 3 line piece of code.

what can i do to clean up the code

So - you ask for help without letting anyone know any of the code.... and expect us all to be mind readers....

...now your question changes into needing help CLEANING UP the code. Hmm - ok.

Well - to clean it up - how about making some functions into which you pass the person's number you want to delete (and probably the list to delete from - then you can have multiple lists at the same time - I would suggest passing this by reference, not by value). Add some spacing etc... (although you haven't enclosed this in PHP blocks, so I can't tell how you meant it to look).

I'd add a suggestion to use for loops once in a while, instead of bluntly simulating them with whiles that have a habit leaving your loop control scattered in bits across half the file.

Also to drop out of PHP mode with ?> to output plain HTML, instead of using multiple echo statements, when there is no variable interpolation or other PHP-specific stuff to be done.

One great cleanup would be to use a database instead of a flat text file. (Leaner and simpler code; much faster performance.) The things aren't that expensive.

Agreed - for loops give faster code execution as well.
