New to PHP

I am new to php and I had a question brought up to me and I wasn't sure. The site I am developing now is going to be hosted on a Apache server but they are switching hosting companies in about 3 months when the contract runs out and the comany they are switching to runs IIS 5.0. Will that affect the php coding?

uhh ... YES! it will affect your coding, unless the IIS box is configured to support the same exact functions that your scripts use.

If you are doing *nix specific functions in your code, they will not work on a Windows box and may create ugly errors.

Obviously, if you are only doing a "hello world" script, you should not have any problems.

There would only be a problem if they disabled some functions in the compilation, and if they did that, they would know that they would have unhappy customers and get less money, so NO it will not...

As for that Unix and Windows based function theory, there are NO Unix only functions, if there is, direct me to a link and I'll be able to tell you a way that would work on both Unix and Windows. (You should never have this problem though, because in the 3 years I have used PHP I have not discovered ONE...)

symlink()
chgrp()
flock()

Or exec() and passthru() in some cases.

How about Posix functions ? you got them working on Windows ? I would like to see how you made that work.

Just because you have never discovered any problems in 3 years of using PHP doesn't mean someone else hasn't.

Not only are there function issues to worry about, but you will need to make sure of path issues. If you are using ...

include('/var/www/script.php');

... on a *nix box, obviously, you will need to fix that before you move to the Windows box.
