I am writing a website and I need to parse a php file (and replace a string) before it is sent to the browser for viewing, how do I do this? Thanks

Ok, you want to parse a php file before processing the file then have the server process it and send it's output to the user?

Heh, now this is a problem I've never seen. But before I will even attempt figuring this out tell me if I've got your problem right.

Yes you have got it right. I need to replace the string 😉 with a smiley and my HTML code is inside the php code (I can't use a ready made template engine because they are all to complicated to install etc., and I wish I could write my own template engine, but I am new and don't have the experience too). Question: If this is hard coded html, then why don't you just put the code to display the smiley in it? If it's data pulled from a database of sort then use str_replace() on it replacing all smiley data with it's appropriate replacement. If you have a huge codebase and you are just not wanting to run throught it all and replace all of these then you could use the "sed" stream editor. Of course this is for *nix OSs. There maybe a windows version though. Or you could install Cywin. (it's what I use on windows)
