entering 'age' also automatically fills 'agegroup'

can anyone help this newbie?

i have a MySQL db into which i want users to enter their details, including their age.

The problem is, i also want users to be able to search records by agegroup, rather than by just a single age... so i figure i also need a field in the db named 'agegroup'.

when entering their details, i don't want the user to have to also enter their agegroup. is there a way of having this field automatically filled by the value in the 'age' field?

it would be great if there was a simple SQL answer to this....or should i be attempting this on the PHP side?

instead of the way you are thinking, just use mysql when the user selects an age range to select that range ie:

if you have a form send the variable ranges

$low_range and $high_range you could use the select like:

$query = "select * from table where age >= $low_range and age <= $high_range";

another way would be to use the between statement but you would have to change the form values to be one lower for the low range and one higher for the high range since it selects in between and not the outer limits also lemme know if this is a solution for you
