Admin Area + Sessions

I've made an 'admin' area for a site and I need to have all the pages behind this to be accessible to users who are logged in. What is the best way to check if one is logged in, sessions? I have no experience with sessions so please thoroughly explain.

go and type 'php' 'authentication' and 'tutorial' into it. then read. come back when you have a concrete problem.
