Any tips on protecting the code which we post to our ISP server?

In other words, looking for a way to make it difficult for source to be
stolen. I understand Apache will not permit the php files to be viewed,
but just want to add additional mechanisms if there are some good strategies.

All you can really do is manage your permissions and hope that the sysadmin at your ISP does his job. If it's out of your hands it's out of your hands.

try Zend Encoder... if you can afford it.
Plus, your server has to have Zend Optimizer installed for it to work.
