help on 4.2.3 installation

I did everything on the installation.txt that came with the zip file but when i try to open a php file i see a black window with a bunch of html text. It opens and closes very fast.

I dont understand what im doing wrong. Ive done it like 5 or 6 times. Im using windows xp

Sounds like you are using the cgi php instead of mod_php and you put php in the registry. Am I at least close so far? :p What it is doing is opening a command window, executing the script there and it closes on exit since that is what cgi does.
