looking 4: code to take any image, upload it, check size, type, and convert to JPG

hello,
i am lookiing for a script that will allow a visitor to upload any image file and then convert it to a certain sized jpeg.

they should be able to browse their HD, choose a file (say a cmyk tiff.) and then run it through this script. the script will then take the tiff, convert it to a RGB, JPG and trim the size to a specified size (IF it is over that size or not that file type).

easy for the uploader to not have to worry about doing any conversion themselves.

Idealy, i would like global variables to be able to easily change the dimentions, types, and file size.

any info ould be great.

you need popen and ImageMagick
It's a good deal more powerful than gd, which can't use gifs - making it a bit useless for uploaded files. Nor tiffs, i believe.

You can do really hardcore things with The Gimp. I believe Yahoo! use it to generate the distorted words you have to confirm to join to stop automated registrations.

Not sure if ImageMagick supports cmyk. Gimp certainly doesn't.

From what ur asking ImageMagick is probly your best bet. Im tryin to get it to workon my apache/PHP4/WinXP machine but for some reason calling ImageMagick thru the system() call doesn't work right. If you do happen to get it working right could you help me out? Here's my thread.

i know i am supposed to use ImagikMagic but i havent had a chance to learn how to call it and do the various features.

i was wondering if there was something already written.

after messing around I got ImageMagick to work! I have to give the full path *nix style. for example:
exec ("c:/serverpath/ImageMagick/convert.exe -size 120x120 c:/serverpath/sites/imgresize/2.jpg -geometry 120x120 c:/serverpath/sites/imgresize/2_tmb.jpg")

I should have the full script done soon. Im actually making one for my 'site.

I made this bash script to generate a calendar from a directory of images. I know it's the wrong language, but it shows how to intelligently resize, border and convert images.

It may not apply to you, but I found mogrify gave the best results, compared to the other programs in the suite, when using relatively large files (eps files about 2M😎. Montage and composite tended to segfault.
