Quick Parsing XML with PHP question

Let's say the XML code looks like this:

<character name="Ralic Trahn">
blah
</character>

I only want to grab the first name, and leave out the last... because there is no firstname or lastname within the character tag, there must be away to not parse anything after a space?

any help would be greatly appreciated

get the value of name, use explode() ?

I'm currently getting the character name value like this:
