How to generate an Excel document?

I heard PHP can automatically generate files in alomst any format. I want to generate a Microsoft Excel document from data stored in a mySql database using php. How would I go about doing this?
Any links, or info would be greatly appreciated.

use the COM functions of PHP - only for a windows-server or generate a textfile and import it in Excel.
