What directory to untar PHP to...

Hi,

I think I'm pretty clear on how to configure and install PHP from the tar file once it's been untarred.

I just don't understand which directory to move the tar file to before using tar xvf.

I've currently tried doing it in the root directory so I end up with all the PHP files residing under /PHPx.x.x/

Does it matter which directory the PHP files untar into?

I had this same problem with figuring out where to untar Apache.

If anyone could tell me where they untar these files to, that would be greatly appreciated.

When you untar an archive, it doesn't really matter where you untar it to. The files that are extracted are used to build the final product, and after you run configure, make & make install, the directory can be removed after you've verfied your software is functioning correctly.

The best option is to untar in you home (~) directory, NOT as root. It is a recommened practice that you do not build binaries from source as the root user, ever.
