Apache2 & PHP install problem

I'm new to Linux/Unix. I want to test PHP scripts locally before loading them onto a server. I bought RedHat 8.0 and installed it on a local machine. 8.0 comes with Apache2 and PHP 4.2. I can't get Apache to recognize a simple PHP command like "phpinfo()" in a .php file. I'm pretty sure the httpd.conf file needs to be properly configured, but I'm lost. I read manual on this, and that just made me queasy. Can anyone help me directly?

I also tried to install Apache and PHP on a WindowsXP Pro laptop. Same problem. Apache runs fine, and PHP is there. They just don't work well together.

Well, you need to make sure Apache loads PHP. Locate the 'loadmodule' lines and uncomment the one that reads something like 'loadmodule php4module' of whatnot (can't remember just now). Then you need to place

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3

near the end of the file.
And of course I'd suggest you 'apachectl restart' after that.
