Installing a script

hi all
i am installing on a new server a document managment script but when i try to login on the sistem i get thos error:

Line 22 say: session_register("user_id");
Line 34 say: header("Location: $uri");

i have try to install this script also on a other server and it work fine, but i need to use it on the server where i get the error, someone can help me?

are you POSITIVE you don't have any blank spaces echo'd out, or stdout in the page above where you're asking for the session?

If you even have a simple " " (blank space) before your opening <? then that would do it.

I'm sure it's a more complicated problem than that, but I know I've lost a couple pounds of hair trying to solve that simple issue once before.

sorry but my sysadmin say me:

This code was originally written for PHP versions earlier than 4.2 that allowed session variables to be sent AFTER the headers. The net effect was actually that nothing happened because the web browser would never get the session cookies. In PHP Versions after 4.2, the eventuality of session cookies and other header elements getting sent AFTER the headers have already gone is handled correctly (through errors).

The fix to the problem is to get those two lines of code to execute before the HTTP headers get sent by the script (usually before the first PRINT or ECHO command)
