stuck with sql - can anybody help?

Sorry to send here a pure sql question, but I find this forum so quick and good place to find help...

So, very simple question: what's wrong with this:

$select = "SELECT firstname, secname, company FROM klubikanta
WHERE secname LIKE "a%"";

I'm trying to print the names starting with "a".

The problem is your quotes within quotes

$select = "SELECT firstname, secname, company FROM klubikanta 
WHERE secname LIKE "a%""; 

should be

$select = "SELECT firstname, secname, company FROM klubikanta 
WHERE secname LIKE 'a%'"; 

notice the double quotes around a% are now single quotes.
