an intelligent "Top" button

Greetings,

On the bottom of each page of my web site, I have a link Top that, when clicked, jumps to the top of the current page.

The problem is some of my pages don't fill a screen, so the top appears, but you don't need it.

More because I think it is an interesting challenge, how would I add some intelligence to this link? For instance, how would I make it appear based on the size of a page? Thanks for your help.

you cannot solve this problem by server-side scripts only. try to use JScript.

You may be able to use Server Side script to solve this, if the following is true:

You know the Screen Resolution of you visitors.
You can analyze the content of you page, before displaying it.

just an idea but couldn't you somehow count the number of lines of output and based on that put in the link or not? :rolleyes:

While you could theoretically do that, but you have to still account for screen resolution, window size, font size, customizable user browser settings. So it wouldn't be practical.

You would need to use javascript. Compare page length vs. window size. This is only assuming that the content area of the page is longer than the remainder of the page.

Which is information that is not available to a server-side script because it's run on the server.

And counting lines is a basic way of doing it, but not constant, especially when you have word wrapped text and not all users will have the same amount of lines per page. Which is why a client-side script would be the only way to it, if there is reliable way to do it. I personally have no idea where to start.
