Code working in 4.2.2 but not with 4.2.3

I run PHPnuke 6.o and My eGallery 2.7.9. I had this working under 4.2.2 My host then upgraded to 4.2.3. The gallery section of my site now produces the following errors for every image thumbnail that was produced by the GD Library:

Tried posting at My eGallery site and hosts site but unable to help so far. I realise this is probably a safe mode issue but I had it working in 4.2.2. As host is remote I have no access to PHP.ini file

Any help would be appreciated

mmm some causes: different php.ini or different "configuration of compiles" (mmm i hate when i dont find the right english word...)

have u overwrited the ini file or r u using the same one?
try the previous one and/or recompile yr php using safe-mode turned off

it is no a problem of version because the 4.2.3 improves the 4.2.2 only for bug fixes and not for functionalities...

Thanks for the fast reply. Unfortunately I have no acces to the PHP.ini file as I use a remote host. My host has no intention of turning off safe mode. I thought that there may be a work-around or something but I am coming up against a brick wall. As you say I have searched the changelog on the PHP site and there does not seem to be anything there that should cause a problem. I am very, very new to all this so I may well be wrong.

It was working under php 4.2.2 though. Honest!!! , it was.

I think it is probably a permissions issue. I have even tried chmod the gallery directory to 777 but this did not work. Could .htaccess file be the answer or am I clutching at straws,

mmm i dont think thats a permission problem even if it seems!!!

i mean... if the version of the php engine is the only change from the previous system... i really cant imagine how permissions r changed...

mmm .htaccess i dont know... i develop w php on windows (4 yrs) and im newbye (1 yr) w it under linux.... but i thought it is needed only if u want to give secure access to users...

try to contact directly yr hoster... they r gods on their machines 🙂

Still think it is a permissions related thing. I found the following at the php.net site. I know that by turning off safe mode it would work but I do not have access to the php.ini file.

I was hoping that someone might know a work around. I have tried putting the safe_mode_gid switch in a .htaccess file. I did not expect it to work and it did not. I could be doing something wrong though as I am new to this. I have asked my web site host if they can turn the safe_mode_gid switch to on as stated below an await a reply. Fingers crossed.

The script certainly worked before they upgraded to PHP4.2.3.
Maybe they left this switch at the default value and did not bother to cange it.

When safe_mode is on, PHP checks to see if the owner of the current script matches the owner of the file to be operated on by a file function.
For example:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 rasmus rasmus 33 Jul 1 19:20 script.php

Running this script.php

results in this error when safe mode is enabled:

However, there may be environments where a strict UID check is not appropriate and a relaxed GID check is sufficient. This is supported by means of the safe_mode_gid switch. Setting it to On performs the relaxed GID checking, setting it to Off (the default) performs UID checking.

When safe_mode is on, PHP checks to see if the owner of the current script matches the owner of the file to be operated on by a file function.

For example:

Hi,

I'm having a similar problem...trying to access the file after uploading. I'm creating a folder for the user who has logged in and uploading a file within this. This is happening perfectly. But i need to rename this uploaded file to something else...and my script fails at this point. Gives me the "safe Mode restriction" problem and says..the script whose uid is 10031 cannot access the file whose uid is 2525....

Whats the solution to this problem? Any help please

Although I don't have the solution for your problem, maybe I can help you not spin your wheels looking at certain possibilities...

I'm almost 100% sure an .htaccess file would not help you ONE BIT. It's parsed by the web server (Apache in this case) and has NOTHING to do with PHP, nor OS permissions / ownerships on files or directories.

Yeh, you are correct. The term "clutching at straws" springs to mind. I do not think there is a solution to this.

I hope that someone can proof me wrong.

On the positive side. I have learned a LOT.

I tried setting the safe_mode_gid variable in the php.ini file to On. This variable was not present in the file....i added this line below safe_mode .

But unfortunately...my server is still doing the UID check....

How can i get rid of this error???

did u try setting the option of safe mode at runtime to off
