Searching, sorting blahing mySQL

Hey,

would a search on mySQL be better if the fields i'm searching are FULLTEXT? just now they're just varchar and are just titles of stuff so they are no more than 50 chars but theres 4000+ entrys in the table and LIKE really sux.

I'm just asking because this table includes half my website and i cant f**k it up.

oh yea would a fulltext search return rows in order of relevance?

I have started useing full text and I think it works pretty good.

And yes you can use full text indexes to get relevance.

Check out the MySQL docs for more info. They have an example on returning results in order of relevance.

Hey,

i've noticed that FULLTEXT searchs ignores 3 letter words, this is really anoying cause what if i want to search for Dr Dre stuff, or Jay Z stuff.

Is there anyway to stop mySQL ignoring 3 letter words?

NVM i'm just gonna do strlen(); and if the keyword is shorter than 3 or equal then i'll just do a LIKE instead of MATCH.

I guess you can explode the keywords and then do strlen...that might be the better option.

There is a setting in MySQL to change the 3 letter thing.
