Alright, here is my question.
I'm sure we have all seen the following line on many web sites,

"There are currently 29 members and 169 guests on the boards".

My question is, how do you do that?

Any response or direction to more information would be greatly appreciated.

Probably lots of ways but I would guess that most sites use a login mechanism or cookies.

If the cookie is there then it is a registered member if not then it is a guest (you would probably keep track of the IP address or some such server data to make sure that you do not count the same person twice).

for lack of a better idea I would probably just code it that is there was no page navigationf for a specific time then the user has gone away.

ideally all users would use a log out mechanism but you could never stop people just closing down the browser and so I see no other way to code round the problem easily.

The scripts are just simply a list of people who have logged in or viewed a page on the boards in the last few minutes. Sometimes two, sometimes five. Depends on the settings. Nothing magical and not accurate to the exact figure. Some people might stay on a page for longer than the set time, in which case they will not be counted after that time.
