Apache 2.0.43 + PHP 4.2.3

I have been trying to get Apache 2.0.43 and PHP 4.2.3 working in harmony with no luck. I read the latest user comments in the installation section of the online PHP manual where some people are saying the two just don't work together at all.

I have since installed Apache 1.3.x and everything seems fine - has anyone managed to get the latest versions working together?

I have just started getting into PHP and I was wondering how many of you use Apache 2 for your development platform or 1.3.x ?
