Hi. I've been into PHP and MySQL for a while and I'm doing ok.
I still got a question which is not about coding. It is about editors.

Is there any special php editor to compose my scripts? 😕 I now use notepad when working in Windows (and kedit or vi for SuSE Linux but that's rare).
I have tried some simple html editors but they just get into my nerves with their "autofill" options. I just need a simple editor which may color my commands and my variables in an easy way to see.

theres a recent post in the 'echo' forum with lots of editors. but at the end of the day you really need to try them all untill you find one you like.

I favor Pico, Edit.com, Notepad and Macromedia Homesite.

You should investigate the latter. It's the best IMHO.

It depends what you like. Zend has a development environment (999$US?) available.

Although you should keep in mind that programs like Homesite etc. will make you lazy. You'll end up a much better coder if you use notepad.
I learnt HTML in notepad but these days I code everything in Dreamweaver (as well as my php etc.), its made me lazy and I dont remember how to code some of the advanced HTML stuff from memory anymore since im so used to just mashing macro buttons. It dosnt take much to remind me but think of the 'p0war' you'll have if you can master everything in notepad and type code in your sleep without colour codes 😃

I use textpad.

Its a pretty good general text editor and has the added benefit of code and sytax highlighting which can be tailored to the way you work.

learn to use vi. it's extremely powerful and you'll never go back to another editor

You could always try EditPlus. I started using it when I got my current job and now I use it at home too. It offers the color text you mentioned and it's very flexible.

I have not tried them all, I quit looking when I found TextPad. I use it as a dropin replacement for NotePad. It is a plain text editor with highlighting, but you also get the option of downloading or building snippet libraries of your own that are a click away. It has a few features that might be irritating at first to some people, such as the behavior of the cursor jump when you add a closing hitchcock, but it is extremely configurable and once you figure out the controls you can train it to perform exactly as you wish.

Thank you all for your advices...
I tried some of the editors mentioned above and I think that I will work with Edit Plus.
And that's not for the "macro buttons" mentioned but for the line numbering and the colored texts.

I was wondering what you folks do for previewing your code..

I'm an old Homesite user and it will not preview php..

is there a way to preview on a XP machine?

i use Crimson Editor. its pretty awesome. the features are great. check it out. dont remember the url, just go do a search for it on google.
