HTML formatting and a CMS

Does anyone know where I can learn how to create something similar to the the "Vb Code" functionality that exists with this forum?

I'm creating a custom CMS and would like to give the user the ability to select text and click a button and add HTML formatting.

I can see how most of it works but wondered if there were php functions or articles written to give more explanation.

Any help is appreciated.

This is very simple.

You would use javascript functions to insert the code (even using the vb code here as a guide.)

And in rendering the text, you would convert it using str_replace.

That's the basics of it. Let me know if you need an exact code view.

Yeah I understand the concepts involved ( JS / str_replace) but I think some code would really help me in the development process.
