get my apache on the internet

I have an apache server, and my work has an extra registered domain name. www.theirname.net

They did it through www.dotdnr.com

They don't use it and said that I can use it.

How do I set it up with apache?

I have set the nameservers to:

ns1.theirname.net
local.theirname.net
admin.theirname.net

and I registered each of them with the ip address of my computer.

I have set the apache config file to:

Server Name ns1.tripletproducts.net

Why won't this work?
I'm not really familiar with this thing. I have gotten it to work once before, but can't do it now. Any help would be great.

Are they correctly handling the zone in question to direct "theirname.net" to an IP? Can you run dig or nslookup using these name servers and verify that?

Can you run this request from an external name server and verify it?

I thought you wanted to setup theirname.net on apache? Do you want to set it up as a VirtualHost? Have a look at the apache documentation on name based hosts as well as IP based ones, depending how you're doing this.

I am obviously confused as to what you're really trying to do.

Please keep in mind I have no idea about this stuff. I had followed an online guide and got it working one time, but I can't find it now.

I believe the answer would be....yes? In the admin page for dotdnr.com you have a page and it says update name servers. You click on that and you can type in your name servers. They recommend ns1, ns2, and ns3.theirname.net

ns1.theirname.net
local.theirname.net
admin.theirname.net

What do you mean running on the server? How do I check this? Or how do i get them running on the server. The apache server is on my computer. We purchased the domain name throught dotdnr.com

huh? remember that the namservers are not ran on my computer...I do not have dns setup on my computer. It's windows xp if that helps any.

ServerName: ns1.theirname.net

I dunno about anyone else but I doubt...

and finally for now...

You can just register the domain name and point it to a domain server, you have to actaully go into that name server and modify their domain so you can point yoursubdomain.theirname.net to your Apache server. So what OS is the DNS server? And I'd go change your registration to not use:

local.theirname.net
admin.theirname.net

as domian servers if they, in fact, are not name servers.

whoops, you probably took down their site if their Webserver does not happen to be the name server as well ;-) Do a ping ns1.theirname.net from inside your network (if still possible) and set the ip back for ns1.theirname.net immediately.

Okay, so it's not being used...no need to panic, I guess. BTW the ns1.theirdomain.com or whatever needs to point to the real DNS server which is probably ns1.theirotherdomain.com ;-)
