Connecting to MySQL

I am new to PHP and a friend suggested me to this site. I see there is a lot of good info here.

But let me get to my question here.

I am running WIN XP with Apache 1.3, PHP4, and MySQL 3.23.52-nt. How do I know if I am connecting to the database? Is there a function out there that can let me know if I am connecting or not?

I have set all my parameters to the default as everything is setup on my laptop. I am just doing things like this so I can learn, not to show anything to anyone else.

Please Help!!!!!!!!!

P.S.

Does anyone know of any good books I might buy to help me with all of this

you just write like this
$dbconn = mysql_connect("localhost", "root", "password") or die (mysql_error());

and then

mysql_select_db("dbname") or die (mysql_error());

just look in the manual for more stuf and some tutorial i dont know if it is this code u want but anyway
