Email does not contain £ sign

Here is my header for my mail() command.

$headers = "MIME-Version: 1.0\r\n";
$headers .= "Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1\r\n";

My email should contain the pound sterling sign "£", but when the email is delivered these have been replaced by the hash sign "#".

Is there anyway round this please?

you use a wrong charset in e-mail generation. try to set charset `latin1' (see corresponging rfc)

It is still printing the # sign instead of the £ sign I'm afraid.

ANy other ideas?
