webgallery with PHP, MySQL and GD

dear reader,

for the last couple of days I've been spening some time finding information on how to combine MySQL, PHP and GD for an online gallery.
The idea is to create a system which can upload images (large) to the database (with php), and than automaticcaly have the images thumbnailed (GD ?!) and stored (either completely or relative) in the MySQL Database. Of course to view them in the gallery at a later stage.
This kept me busy and i tried allmost everything, and the information i found was pretty contradictive sometimes. I can't figure it out. Is there some explicit tutorial about this? I don't know much about GD. So I hope everything explained.

I'm not that great with GD either, but I do know you can read about GD functions here in the php manual.

I know of a script that does that exact thing you're talking about. 4images. Maybe you can take a look at the code and see if it answers your questions.

Ok thanx. It's all linux shit only. I run a win2k machine and cannot compile anything. Ehm..I'm kinda wondering whether or not GD is the thing for me. Are there any alternatives?
