Keeping sessions alive

I was just wondering if there was a way to keep a session alive even after a visitor has left the website. If so some code or a link to the manual to that section would be greatly appreciated because I can't find it.

I have found an error in the PHP.ini file where it was deleteing the sessions everytime the browser was restarted and I turned that off by setting it to 4 hours. But it is still emptying out my sessions when ever I close the browser window and I can't figure it out. Its not a horrible thing but can become annoying if a visitor is a regular user of the site.

you can create your session handler. go and read tutorial @ hotscripts.com

I have tried everything I did read the tutorial on hotscripts and have tutorials on this site and at webmonkey. They all say to modifiy your php.ini file and I have done it to all of there specifications but to no prevail. I don't really believe there is a way to keep the session alive without storeing a cookie set yourself to the user that will specify he's/her session id. Which is saved on my site for four hours.
I believe that I was told that there is already a cookie set by php but for somereason it isn't working on my site and I believe this to be an IIS to PHP problem.
