8 people gotta play each other

Im really struggling to figure out how to do this

Im doing a Cup Tourny thing and basically there is a stage where every player plays each other

i.e. say theres 8 players:

1 v 2
1 v 3
1 v 4
1 v 5
1 v 6
1 v 7
1 v 8
2 v 3
2 v 4
2 v 5
2 v 6
2 v 7
2 v 8
3 v 4
3 v 5
3 v 6
3 v 7
3 v 8
4 v 5
4 v 6
4 v 7
4 v 8
5 v 6
5 v 7
5 v 8
6 v 7
6 v 8
7 v 8

i.e. a total of 28 matches, any idea at all how to do this? Just geting the above from 8 would be nice =]

try following:

$r = array();
$players = 8;

for($i=1; $i<=$players; $i++) {
  for($j=1; $j<=$players; $j++) {
    if(!in_array($j." v ".$i, $r) && $i != $j) {
      $r[] = $i." v ".$j;
    }
  }
}

print_r($r);

Hmm problem time uhoh

$PlayersPerPoule=8;
$players=array(1); (made it so its got a value at 0, so $players[1] is start of 'useful data')
$players[]=$memberID; (got from SQL query)

$r = array();

for($i=1; $i<=$PlayersPerPoule; $i++)
 {
  for($j=1; $j<=$PlayersPerPoule; $j++)
   {
    if(!in_array($players[$j]."v".$players[$i], $r) && $i != $j)
     {
      $r[] = $players[$j]."v".$players[$i];
     }
   }
 }

print_r($r);

Displays all possible outcomes rather than excluding the multiple ones
Any ideas?

instead of

    if(!in_array($players[$j]."v".$players[$i], $r) && $i != $j)

try:

    if(!in_array($players[$i]."v".$players[$j], $r) && $i != $j)
