How can I make this statement more elegant?

You could use ereg. More information here:

http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.ereg.php

It would be something like:

if(!ereg("yes|no|maybe" $i)){
$i = "maybe";
}

I am not a regular expression wizard, so that could very well be wrong. Look into syntax further to be sure.

You might have to insert a comma in there. I know the tutorials have commas in them to seperate the ereg parameters and the string to search. It might work without them though, but here's how I would put it:

if(!ereg("yes|no|maybe", $i)){ 
$i = "maybe"; 
}

I don't see anything wrong with what you had; it's fast and clear. This might be a cuople fewer characters but not really more "elegant":

if ( !($i == "yes" || $i == "no")  ) { 
  $i = "maybe"; 
}

Yeah, typo on my part. You always need to separate different arguments like that in functions with commas.
