i am using sun cobalt. here is the problem i have the case sensitive issue.
i check out the internet, no easy and full solution was given out there.
and i just don't understand why nobody do something about it yet.

the general understanding is that when you use http, it is not case
sensitive, right?
such as http://www.somedomian.com/help.html and
http://www.somedomain.com/Help.html will be the same, right?

so even apache is based on linux, case sensitive system, why until now,
apache still does not have a easy mode built in to make the http request
case insensitive?

if apache not, could sun cobalt make this kind mode built in let us turn on
and off the case sensitive property easily? sun cobalt is competiting the
market with IIS, right? and many people will be someone like me that will
transfer from IIS to sun cobalt. i can give many reasons why we want
transfer from iis to sun cobalt apache.

but if our sites (dozens to hundreds sites) were case insensitive, and maybe
this only issue could block us transfer to sun cobalt.

in the tech terms, apache doesn't support case insensitive http is not
making sense. at least, apache should give us the right to choose.). and in
the business terms, sun cobalt should build and add the its own patch to the
apache to make the case insensitve working. this could be done easily with
their million dollars R & D budget team. and this will give sun cobalt the
great competition advantage to compete with the IIS for the market.

the benefit is thousdands times greater than the cost if sun cobalt could do
something about that.

just don't understand why it is not done yet. in apache or in sun cobalt?

by the way, netscape could recognize the case insensitive site on apache but
internet explorer not. will it be just a cup of tea for microsoft make its
so generous free offer of internet explorer does the same thing as netscape
does, recognize the case insensitive site on apache?

or why no third party softwar company make a easy patch to apache, this
patch could be done easily and sold to a large market of people using
apache.

just don't understand why this simple issue still hung in there in today's
time, while every business in the internet industry investing millions
dolloars into the R & D just try to get a small edge over its competitors.
but this simple and easy solution with great competition advantage, nobody
do it yet.

any thoughts? helps?

thanks

    Serain,

you have to consider the fact that case-sensitivity actually ADDS functionality to the mix, which is why it is even an issue for you in your case.

look, UNIX and Linux were founded and built around the idea of security -- and you're using a SUN Cobalt server? SUN Linux or Solaris? SUN is just basically all about secure features.

a patch for Apache to allow either/or (thus allowing Apache to become more patchy, he he...)? i don't know. why don't you ask the developers yourself? http://apache.org

    good luck!

nix is case sensitive, Windows is not. You can write programs that are case-sensitive on Windows but you can't change that on nix. It isn't apache that is "holding you back", it is *nix. And they did that for security reasons as guzman-el-bueno said.

        8 days later

Oh that's too much they have a mod for those who are too lazy to spell or too stupid to figure out case-sensitivity? They are dumbing down programming way too much, I say enough. If you were meant to program you should at least understand the basic logic of if I call something $Var that it is different from $var. So please make sure you dumb down the interface for the AOL users but don't make programming languages for monkeys. That's the end of my rant 🙂

If there is nothing that can be said that is useful or helpful, I'll lock this. No, I am not directing this towards one person but to everybody and anybody that replies or has replied including myself. :p

            yelvington,

this is what i was getting at, but didn't really say it well enuff. never post when you're in a hurry and on the phone... you read it later and it makes little or no sense.

if you use caps in your spelling, then that is how you have to refer to it. if you do not use caps, then that is also how you have to refer to it.

nice rant, jerdo. is it ok with you if the guy that started this post gets a start somewhere? God forbid you ever had to start somewhere too, and as a beginner! no??

i do agree with you tho, the standards should not be lowered, people should learn the standards so that there is uniformity across the board and a basic implicit level of understanding. room for improvement? maybe.

mod_spelling frivolous? yeah. but so are half the features on the average cell phone.

there's my rant. time for coffee.

ps> dotwebbie, sure, close it down. (also, nice to meet you.)

Locking. If the original poster wants to say something, please pm me.
