Help with renaming filenames

If I have test.pic.jpg and I want to rename that picture test.pic_thumb.jpg, what is the best way to do that?

I was exploding the file at the . and then adding the _thumb. This works great for filenames with one dot, but with more than one dot it does not.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

echo substr($s, 0, strrpos($s, "."))."_thumb.jpg";

That works but I didn't mention that I need to be able to put the original extension back on. The file could be .jpg .gif .png etc.
