getting apostrophes out of mySQL

Hi,
Does anyone know the possible reasons for apostrophes not being shown in mySQL fields (i've only tried with 'text' and 'blob' datatypes) in a PHP page.

Basically i've just stuck a text field record straight out of a database and into a PHP page and all the apostrophes have come up as little square boxes!! 😕

So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

and are therefore replaced...you could use the [man]str_replace() [/man], function to change the single apostrophe to two (don't forget to replace the two with one when presenting to the user.)

or some other character to get around this

I had a problem with this, the easiest way I could find to do it was to replace the character ' with the string "' which is the HTML code for a single apostrophe (') The code to replace this is...

$field=ereg_replace ("'", "&#39;", $field);

Yeah it does, thanks alot.

Now all I have to do is go through the database and replace my 's with &#39s

mysql_escape_string
(PHP 4 >= 4.0.3)

mysql_escape_string -- Escapes a string for use in a mysql_query.
Description
string mysql_escape_string ( string unescaped_string)

This function will escape the unescaped_string, so that it is safe to place it in a mysql_query().
