fopen / include through https

I'm trying to access a file on our secure server from another server (Not secure.)

However I keep getting a
Warning: Failed opening 'https://...' for inclusion (include_path='')
when I include it.
The same story more or less repeats itself when I try to fopen (using the URL)

Both servers has "allow_url_fopen" on and neither safe_mode nor open_basedir is active.

I've tried moving the file to the public_html directory from which the script can read fine.

running: FreeBSD

Any Ideas?
