Truetype vs. Opentype fonts

I've noticed that I can only get Opentype fonts to work on the server I'm working off. When I try using Truetype, I'll only get some ascii "boxes" printing out. I would think this would be the other way around. Anyone experience this before?

One other thing... I notice that when I enable GD 2 support, then it doesn't work. However, if I switch it to pre-GD 2 in my php.ini, then it shows up!

And another thing (since I'm pretty much talking to myself here, and will hopefully just figure out myself), when I get php info on GD 2, it states that its Freetype Linkage is "with freetype". But with GD 1, its with "TTF". Its looking like I have to recompile?
