trim variable?

I need to sort records by month. The value of the field I will sort by is YYYY-MM-DD but I only want to check for the value of MM and sort those together.

I.E.: The date field is for birth date. I am creating a table and want to list all the people with 01 as thier birth month under January, 02 February, etc, etc.

in the SQL you can use MONTH(date) AS month to get just the month as a variable. then ORDER BY month, and then later use it as a variable.

[man]strtotime[/man]

to handle it on the database side, you will need to use your database's date functions. Which one are you using?

hmm, okay. I am using mySQL.
I guess I am approaching this wrong. I was attempting to create seperate SELECT statements for each month.

Is there a way to use the dob field (formatted like: YYYY-MM-DD) for a SELECT statement and just ignore the YYYY and the DD? So that my SELECT only returns records that have 01 in the MM positions?

that's what MONTH() does... you feed it a date with the format YYYY-MM-DD and it spits out the MM...
so:

SELECT dob FROM table WHERE MONTH(dob) = 1

This will select all the people born in January.
