A general question

I am trying to code a Christmas calendar. It's important that you can't "open the boxes" before the right date. I was already good to go with the date() whatchamacallit (I'm new - does it show?), but then I remembered those pesky timezones.

Basically I'm asking that do you people have any ideas how to get past it. Any of the code snippets I found proved to be no good at all.

The only thing I've come up with is to use cookies, but I'm wondering if you'd have any ideas.

keeping track of timezones?

This site approaches the problem by using GMT all the time.
Then the site keeps track of the interval of the users time from GMT in the db. That way all of your calculations are done using GMT, and right before it's outputted, you account for the user defined interval.

You'll probably have to write a javascript function that runs when the page is loaded to check the browser's local time.
