date formatting

hello,
i have a problem with date formatting.
i am using PHP and mysql.
i want to accept the date from the user in mm/dd/yyyy format and if the user enters anything else, i wont except it.
how do i set the criteria on my textbox where the date is inputted.

i find it easier to just setup the db field as an INT (10) and insert a timestamp .. that way you have complete flexibility over it, so when you pull it youi can echo it like

echo date("m/d/y",$data['timestamp']);

but to answer your question, set a note, and javascript error the hell outa them until its right-> or just use javascript to insert a / after every 2 chars?

thanks for your reply. so if i have date as timestamp int(10) and assuming my database is empty and i have to talk valued from the user who enters the date in the text box...how do i restrict my user from only entering dates in the mm/dd/yyyy format

i just thought of something, as long as they put something in between the month/day/year this will work

// works with (space) . -  or / 
list($mont,$day,$year)=split('[ /.-]', $theirDate);
// then just format their m/d/y

Put three fields on the form. Accept only 1-12 in the first, only 1-31 in the second etc. Then stuff them together in your code.
