How easy is it to code up ur own message board?

I have been running my own website and am in the process of upgrading it using PHP. And for the message board on the site, I use somebody else's where I have modified the coding to the way that I like it.

But while I was looking for this message board to use on my website I have come accross a lot of different free PHP/mysql/flatfiles board and they have been designned ok. But I have said to myself that I could do so much more better like some boards of which I have come across uses 50+ mysql querys, of which you could easily half that lot.

But I have never tired to code up my own message board. So I am wondering how hard it would b to do it. Or even how easy it could b 2 get a small number of php coders together to do this. As I know that my strengths is in the coding side then the designing side.

So any ideas or views on this?

Once you've got the basic concepts of building a message board down it's quite easy to build one from stratch. It usually takes me a few hours to put together a fully functional board, then I slowly add the functionality I want from there.

I agree, it's pretty simple once you have the basic understand of how it's going to work. Just set up a mysql data base first. with "topics" and "posts" and go from there. The Id, timestamp, and your posts and user/password of course.

Then you just add in your functions of adding topics/posts editing, deleting and displaying. I prefer to use one main file, that does all the functions, and use the 'require' command. Then all you have to worry about is the design. Once you have that done, the rest of it will move swiftly.
