using if and then in sql

Hello there,

I have been consistently amazed by what SQL can do. I'm really looking forward to a stable version of mySQL 4.0+.

Is it possible to say something like this:

if exists group1_table select from group1_table else
if exists group2_table select from group2_table else...

?

In other words can you do queries based upon queries themselves in a logical structure. And if you have any links to this, I'd appreciate it.

In Mysql: No.

Most other DBMS: Yes.

The problem with stored procedures (the common term) is that the language used differs between products. Even though there exists a standard (SQL/PSM) most vendors have defined a proprietary language.

So , if you wish to read more you should check the docs for the DBMS that you are using. (Unless you are stuck with Mysql that is.)
