.php4 extension

I am trying to start using php scripts on my web site. I have tried uploading the most basic form possible. When I called my ISP, they told me that in order to use php, I would have to use the .php4 extension on the end of my files. I have tried that, and the result of the script does not appear. I have inserted a small date script into the body of a regular .html file and it works fine. I have also tried using the form script on my computer as a server and it works fine, but with only a .php extension. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have just tested your script in my server and it works just fine.
Are you sure you have to use the php4 extension?
have you tried the normal "php".

i have just spotted something, try cahnging the method to POST instead of GET.
that sould probably be the problem

I have tried not using the .php4 extension and just using .php and the Author response does not appear. i've also tried changing from GET to POST. Same problems...

the php function you are having trouble with is a very siple one. I'm afraid there might be something wrong with your php configuration. Try running the php_info() and see what comes up

I hope you've contact your ISP about it also...this sounds like it is on their end.

One mistake I make all the time is when I save my files, I save them like fileName.php, but I forget that notepad puts .txt onto the end of your file unless you change the "type" drop-down to "all files".

Only thing I can think of, because I make this mistake all the time.

Thank you for your responses. What does it mean exactly to "Try running the php_info() and see what comes up"? How do I do that exactly. Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question, but I'm in the newbie section...

php_info() is a method you can run, usually to test if your phps are working.

So you'd make a file named phptest.php4 and just put this in it:

<?
    php_info();
?>

That function will write out a big web page describing your PHP installation (if it's configured correctly.)

I think my question comes down to this. When I embed php code into a file with a .php4 extension and upload it to Earthlink, it seems to work fine. However, if I use any type of form with the ending file ending in .php4, nothing happens. Do you think this is Earthlink's problem? Is it common for other ISPs to require the .php4 extension? I really think the extension in some way is causing the problem when I use it for a form... Sorry this is so confusing, but I'm not confused by the code, only how to view it online!!

Now I realize.... I needed to use HTTP_POST_VARS. Wow, that's an important thing to know. It works find now. Thanks for everyone's input.
