convert MySQL basedauthentication script to .htaccess based

Hi all,
I recently downloaded a news letter script which is using MySQL based authentication scripts but I'ld like to use .htaccess instead of the mysql based. Hw can I use?
I'm using ELM script which is downloadable from http://technobreeze.com.
Please help me out.
