Advice Please

I'm new at PHP, MySQL and Linux but do have a good knowledge of computers, applications and software. Currently a MS user but would like to dabble and eventually become fluent in Linux along with PHP and MySQL.

I plan on installing the following on my extra hard drive and need some advice on the setup and some general advice on the best way to proceed. I will be developing websites and databases on my local machine and will need to set the system up to design, develop and view a website with a database locally.

I will be installing the following.
Redhat 8 or 7.3 Which is the easiest to setup?
Apache 1.3.26
PHP 4.2.3
MySQL 3.23.32

The Redhat 8 comes with 3 setup options
desktop
workstation
server
Which do I need to install to perform the above mentioned items.

Any advice on pitfalls, setup or any other items would greatly be appreciated. Any suggestions on tutorials for setup would greatly be appreciated also. I know there is alot of info out there but at times it gets confusing with so much to choose from.

You can use PHP/MySQL/Apache on a windows system. thas what I use (although I am moving over to Linux over Xmas). It works ok for testing, but I wouldnt run a public server on it.

(for those that are thinking "If he's happy with windows, why is he moving to linux", I can only say this: "I like a challenge!")

I fought with RHL 7.2 for 2 months trying to get it to install on a P2. Traced it down to an incompatable HD. (finally got RH to admit).

It became such a headache that I gave in and bought OS X (which is unix). Now, this thing runs great even on my rev b imac. Great for development (php/mysql- pre-installed apache).

Gave up on RHL, got an old box, going to try BSD.

In the near future, going to get an xServ and get rid of my 4 other boxes.

Just my 2 cents.
