inserts with binds

How different is bind insert different from an ordinary insert statement? I am using perl to insert the data into DB eventually going to port this to php.
INSERT INTO TABLENAME (blah,blaa,blac,blad) Values('$blah','$blaa','$blac','$blad')

Any ideas/thoughts??

I found the answer now. For those of you who might be interested INSERT INTO TABLENAME (blah,blaa,blac,blad) Values(:1,:2.:3.:4)
$query->execute($blah,$blaa,$blac,$blad) ||die $query-errstr();
